PONTIN’S 4th July 2011 - U15s

The weekend started off in fantastic style with Fajitas, a sing song and a very important team talk delivered by Carol’s husband Steve – Team Coach. The girls even took themselves off to bed at a reasonable hour in preparation for a busy schedule next day.

At quarter past nine next morning most of the girls were courtside as requested to warm up for their first match at ten o’clock, when an official approached to tell us that another team had been added to our group and we were due to play then at 9.30! Mad scramble to get the other three girls to the courts as well as getting the coach down in time to warm the girls up – the gazebo wasn’t even up properly – what a start!

We needn’t have panicked though; the girls did us proud winning their first game against YWCA Bury Green 8-2! Next was Grangetown U16s - again we won 7-5. West Pennine were next with a draw at 5-5 each. Then it was demolition Derby with a win of 14-2 against Grangetown U15s followed by another draw of 6 each against another YWCA Bury team. They didn’t make it easy on our poor hearts with this game though, coming back from a loss at half time. They won the next two games with the same results of 7-6 against Deeside and Ribble Valley so we were certainly on a roll! However, in the next game we were narrowly beaten by Nottingham 10 – 7 and the final game saw us playing another U16s team – Blackpool. This was a comedic game to watch as our girls looked like Lilliputians compared to the giants bred by the Blackpool team. I can’t even pretend it was close – I think they beat us 12-2 but the girls enjoyed it and we had to laugh at our poor shooters trying to get around the hands of the defenders in the circle and at a ball that just appeared high in the sky when Leah Niven tried to get it over the head of her defender when taking a throw in!! That was the last game of the day. We had done fantastically well and went into the evening knowing we were in a strong position for the next day and looking forward to our meatballs supper, courtesy of the tasty John Crook ..... or was it the meatballs that were tasty! Also, the promise of an evening reliving the games played that day and more games with rounders and water fights on the agenda and just a mention of a celebration for Carol and Steve’s THIRTIETH wedding anniversary – what better way to spend it!

Next morning – not too early – we were told we would play Grangetown in the quarter final. We were quite confident as we had beaten this team easily the day before and today was no different with us winning 12-5 and so on to the Semis against Deeside. Again, the girls made us suffer on the sidelines, going into half time losing 3 - 1. However, they are Charlestown girls and they finished the game as deserved winners 12-7. We were in the Final – against Nottingham – the only U15s team to have beaten us the day before. No problem, we were up for the fight. The court was surrounded by spectators as all the Finals were played on the same court 2. We had quite a crowd of supporters, with all the YWCA Bury girls cheering us on and even Carol got to watch this game because her Umpiring duties had finished. Nerves were shot – ours anyway, not the girls, they were raring to go. The girls played an excellent game with the ball being in our circle so often we could have won by about ten - alas – it was one of those games that sometimes happen, the ball just wouldn’t go in for us. The final result was 7-5 to Nottingham. We were all so proud and happy to be runners up out of a group of ten as the girls collected their medals and Tara, team captain, collected the cup – which she is to keep and take with her to Ireland as just reward for being so inspirational throughout the whole tournament! Well done Tara and well done U15s!!

A big thanks to all the girls: Tara, Becky, Holly, Lucy, Monique, Olivia, Helen, Abbie, Leah, Kate – and to Carol and Julie and their respective hubbies, Steve and Rick.

PONTINS 2011 – U12

We went to Pontins this year again for a Netball Tournament. The weather for the weekend wasn’t great. It was extremely windy and as you can guess the ball was going all over the place on court! We had a little rain but luckily not much.

As a team we played really well and did well as we came 6th overall out of 12 teams. We played 11 games in the first round and won 5, drew 2 and lost 4.

Then we got through to the play-offs and first we played against Parkside Black and lost 5-6. Then we played Leyland and won 7-4.

Going to Pontins I think definitely builds the team’s friendship with each other as we had fun even when we weren’t playing netball! I’m just glad I was there playing netball and not chess!

The results for our matches were:
  - Leyland Won 8-5
  - Parkside White Drew 4-4
  - St Mary’s Won 10-0
  - Rochdale Black Lost 3-6
  - Deeside Diamonds Won 9-0
  - ECNC Won 9-1
  - Trafford Snappers Lost 3-5
  - Ribble Valley Green Won 9-1
  - Trafford Bluebells Lost 3-8
  - Parkside Black Drew 3-3
  - Ribble Valley Blue Lost 3-6
Play-Offs
  - Parkside Black Lost 5-6
  - Leyland Won 7-4

Well done to all involved - Alice Scott U12s
